Busy, Busy, Kindergarten!

Hi Everyone! We had a wonderful week in kindergarten! In math we have been counting and sorting our shoes, writing numbers 1-5, and learning how to choose and rotate through math stations. Each day we add a dot, link, and calendar marker to count the days in school and do some number sense activities like counting forward and backward on the number line, looking at dots on five frames, and learning how to flash numbers on our fingers.
On Wednesday we started Writer's Workshop! I do a very short minilesson and the kids work at their seats making books for a very short time (about five minutes). They have learned how to think of themselves as writers, and authors of books, and then we have learned some "nuts and bolts" of the routine like how to keep our work in a writing folder, what to do when you feel finished, etc!

We have been reading alphabet books and this week we cut out uppercase and lowercase letters and we will use these letters next week to sort letters in different ways to help with letter recognition as we get started with our letter/sound correspondence and handwriting lessons.

Students drew self portraits and learned how to trace their work with a permanent marker. They came out great, I was really impressed!

Today I introduced the kids to ipads! We have a cart of them to use in the classroom! We used an app called doodle buddy and learned how to turn the ipad on and navigate through the app. It is basically a drawing tool that students will be using to practice writing numbers, letters, and words.

We welcomed our Champlain intern, Shania, to our classroom and she will be joining us every Tuesday and Thursday!

On top of all of that, children are still learning all of the routines of the day and little details of cleaning up snack, walking in a line, gathering belongs at the end of the day, and much, much, more! I am sure your children are tired! They are doing a wonderful job and are a really great group of students. They filled the buzzy jar again and we enjoyed a dance party celebration. :)

Ask your children about their forest friday adventure today! We opened the puddle pants and went wading through the Allen Brook! It was amazing!
