Spring is here! Or, maybe it's still winter?! It's hard to tell these days. Today the kindergartners found the last patch of ice in our forest classroom and we were able to squeeze in one more day of sledding!
Inside, kindergartners have been hard at work with reading, writing, and doing math! In writing we are finishing up a unit of opinion writing, inspired by wonderful read alouds! We have focused on building empathy, learning about and accepting differences, and more. Kindergarten is a wonderful place to begin deep conversations and this unit has been a great start. We are also so lucky to be getting many more books for our classroom through a donorschoose project, centered around diversity, antiracism, inclusion, identity, kindness, and more. What an amazing community this is, filling this project and more, in just two hours!
They needed a little push, but most kindergartners are beginning to write full sentences in writer's workshop and it will be exciting to see what they write during our upcoming narrative unit! They certainly have many stories to tell!
In reading kids are building their sight word knowledge, blending sounds together to read CVC words, and reading sentences! The phonemic awareness work that we are continuing with the Heggerty program is really doing wonders for their ability to blend and segment words. We have also been sorting pictures and words using the Words Their Way spelling program to supplement the Fundations work we are doing.
In math we have introduced many new concepts and fun games to practice them! We are working on teen numbers, five partners (numbers that go together to make five) and addition equations.
