It's hard to believe January just started and is already almost over! Kindergartners have been loving the snowy weather, and our morning time outside has been absolutely delightful! Somehow instead of complaining about the long walk to the forest classroom, they take turns pulling each other in the sleds on the way up! (Have I mentioned how awesome this class is?!) Most of the outside time is spent between the big sledding hill, and a large snowy bush affectionately named "The Challengers' Igloo" by the kindergartners.
Inside we have been continuing our literacy work doing daily handwriting practice of upper and lower case letters, and lots of practice with CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. We are hearing the vowel sounds in the middle by putting them "on a roller coaster", sliding bingo chips forward for each sound in a word, and tapping out the sounds and blending them together when looking visually at the word on the board. This, in combination with learning a large repertoire of "sight words" (words we memorize, instead of sound out) is turning this class into a bunch of readers and writers!
In writing we have been making pattern books, focusing on using our kindergarten sight words, and using our letter sound knowledge and word play games to listen and record beginning, middle, and ending sounds. With the beginning of the year in the hybrid model, things have gone a little more slowly this year but the kindergartners are really beginning to feel like writers, and we are getting ready to kick off some literacy groups that will focus on reading in a more differentiated way.
In math we are learning about teen numbers, and simple addition. We are using ten frames to see how we can make numbers with five and some more, or the "doubles" way. We are making connections between how we break apart numbers to make them on our fingers, or what we call numbers bonds. Lots of deep thinking about number sense!
