Jan 15-19

We have had a great week in kindergarten! We have read books and had great discussions about Martin Luther King, Jr. I must say, kindergartners are thoughtful and deep thinkers and it is so uplifting to hear them talk about equality! We have continued exploring pattern books with both reading and writing! The connection between the two has been very powerful for the kids. We are building their sight word knowledge, thinking about spacing between words, and how that helps us read our own sentences as well as point to each word in our pattern books.
In math we are looking at ten frames that are aligned differently: five wise and pair wise. This is the beginning of thinking about doubles, like 2+2=4 and 3+3=6. It is also a nice connection to how we show numbers on our fingers and can make them in different ways (for example you can show 6 on your hands three different ways, 5 and 1, 4 and 2, or 3 and 3). We also learned about number trees which is another way to decompose numbers. We have been looking at buttons on the calendar markers and seeing how different combinations make 3 and 4 (and soon 5!).

Yesterday we had a great four winds, learning about what animals do in winter. We looked for animal tracks outside and did little skits pretending to be animals in winter. Some hibernate, migrate, are dormant, or active.

This morning Ms. S came and did more social thinking lessons with us. Last week they did an obstacle course and talked about what it means to have your body in the group. This week was a story about whole body listening, which we are continuously practicing!
Lastly, this morning we got to open our boxes from our last donorschoose project! Some new seating for our classrooms and some sensory tools for our peace corner. The kids were really excited!
