We have been reading several versions of Gingerbread books and practicing many songs to act out a gingerbread play! In reading we practiced our letter formation on white boards with the Fundations lines, practiced independent and partner reading.
Children learned how to teach themselves a "SNAP" word (words we know in a snap, right when we see them versus sounding them out). We looked for these words in books we were reading and used fun highlighter tape to make them stand out.
In Writer's Workshop we started a new unit on pattern books. We are using the "just right" early readers we are learning to read to get ideas for making our own pattern books. The goal is to stick to one topic (my dog, my house, etc) and each page repeats the pattern. (for example: My dog eats, my dog fetches, my dog plays or The sky is blue, the water is blue, the popsicle is blue). This will help kids continue learning to listen for sounds in words as well as learn and practice some sight words we are working on! We are practicing saying "I'll try my best!" and writing the best we can.
Mrs. Scott came in from the Tech Lab to teach us about an app on the iPads called Daisy the Dinosaur. This week was the "Hour of Code" where schools nationwide participate in one hour of coding to promote computer science and programming among children. Kindergartners got to program Daisy to do things like move forward, jump, grow bigger or smaller, and spin.
