February

Wow, this month is flying by so quickly!
Students had a great time making lanterns with our Artist in Residence. Thank you to so many parents who volunteered and were able to come for the celebration, it was so nice to see everyone!

In math we have spent some time looking at nickels and pennies and thinking about counting on from five. We are beginning a new unit on shapes that we will continue after vacation. As we work on shapes we will continue building our number sense through small groupwork in class. Ms. Heather (our special educator) will begin coteaching math with me after vacation, so we will be able to differentiate learning in some new ways!

In writer's workshop we are finishing up our unit on True Stories. After working hard on making our writing easier to read, students have learned how to use a checklist to look at their writing and think about how they are doing in regards to recording sounds in words, reading their own writing, leaving space, using lowercase letters, etc. Today they went back with a special revising pen and worked to make some of their writing even better. Sophisticated kindergarten work! After the break we will be starting a new unit on "How-To" writing.

It is such a fun time of year to watch children taking off with their reading! There will be no reading pocket over vacation (too many days risk books getting lost!) but we will pick back up again after the break. Thank you for continuing to read with and work with your children at home!
