We just started a mini unit on measuring. We have been measuring different things (pieces of yarn, my scarf, etc) each day and comparing them with the vocabulary words "shorter than" "longer than" and "the same as". Today we measured with Isabella's new jazz shoes!
The calendar this month has been sweaters and vests with different numbers of buttons. The buttons are combinations of two colors, and we are working on a new concept called a number tree (see the white cards in the picture next to the calendar markers). The total number is on the top, and the numbers off the "branches" are the groups that go together to make that number. For example, 1 green button and 2 orange buttons make 3 altogether. It has been a little tricky for them as it is so new but they are starting to get it!
We are continuing our study of community and one thing we've done is make a community wall and label the buildings and people we find (or could find) in a community. This week we also made a google map of where everyone lives in our class and it was very fun to see everyone's house from a "bird's eye view". Let us know if you would like to skype with us to tell us about your job in the community!
What wonderful mathematicians you all are! Those number trees look challenging. Love your new Jazz Shoes, Isabella! They look like they would be really good for measuring things!
