November!

Hi Everyone!
Just a few updates and things to ask your kid about! In math we made a pattern quilt and have begun a new work station of filling in shapes in different ways with pattern blocks. We have been counting by two's and using bikes (two wheels on each) to talk about twos, doubles, and even numbers. In science we carved a pumpkin and estimated how many seeds inside- most kids thought there were way less than we actually found out! We had lots of practice counting by 10's! We saved the pumpkin in a plastic jar to see what will happen- it is getting pretty gross!
We are working our way right through the letters and sounds in fundations and you will find a mid-unit progress sheet in your child's folder. In class we call them a "show me what you know" (so I know what to teach you). The kids are doing great! It is fun to see them putting it all together between the letter ID/sounds, beginning to read some sight words and identifying and writing the sounds in writer's workshop. We finished up our science/nature unit (the kids were starting to lose interest so we ended a tad early...you will find the work from their writing folder in their Friday folder this week) and we have launched write into writing pattern books. Ask your child to explain to you what a pattern book is! Here is a video of the kids practicing touching a block for each word in their sentence. Practicing word awareness, one to one correspondence, and spaces between words for writing. The writing I am seeing all of a sudden is amazing, and they are feeling very proud! We can't wait to show you at our open house/celebration on December 18th. We are also continuing our work on our FlatClassroom project, connecting with other classes around the world. The latest was this video we made to share about the weather in our state. It is called the "View From Our Window" project. Thanks for reading!
