Shelburne Farms

Last week we continued to work on Old Favorite Storybooks. We practiced adding to the story when each time we tell it and using clues from the page to help us. We also started to notice familiar words in the text and practiced using them to help us tell the story. During writing we continued to write like scientists by drawing just what we see and adding labels to our drawings to tell more. We finished off the unit this week by writing sentences about what we think, notice or wonder and by using science books to give us more information our science writing topics (mainly trees and leaves).

In math, we learned about tally marks and practiced how we can count on from five. We've talked more about the shapes in the calendar and will continue this throughout the month. Last week we opened up one of our pumpkins and scooped the seeds out. Today we counted them. We made groups of ten and then counted by tens to find out that our pumpkin had 412 seeds!

On Friday we went on our Shelburne Farms field trip with Mrs. Read's class. We started the day by having snack then we split up and explore the woods with a Shelburne Farms leader. Each group was a little different but generally we got to build with nature materials, find and discuss nature objects, and collect materials for the group leader to use to build a fire. We also got to have hot cocoa as we sat around the fire. After a cold morning we went inside for lunch. In the afternoon we discussed what we noticed when we were in the woods and students got to go see the animals that were still around the farm including chickens, goats and pigs. This was a favorite part for many students. Today we talked more about the trip and students drew about their favorite part.
