In Readers' Workshop, we have been learning how to be independent readers and partner readers. We have been looking at the pages, thinking about what we see, making guesses about how to read the page and talking with friends and teachers about what we learned from those pages. We use a lot of non-fiction text for this, but have been relaxing after lunch each day with fairy tales and other favorite storybooks.
We have officially kicked off our Fundations activities and the children did a great job learning about the different lines on the pages of our notebooks that we make our letters on. We practiced the formation of the letters b and m this week. Hopefully, your child can spy those letters for you or practice making those sounds when they see them in a book or hear them in a conversation.
In Math, we have become really skilled at sorting, organizing and counting. It has been wonderful to watch the children negotiate with one another about their opinions, why they think that their plan could work, and how they support one another by working together on a task. We have been working on different ways to solve the same problem and explaining how we came to our answer.
It was our first rainy Friday for our outdoor classroom this week. The children were able to try out the puddle pants and did a great job noticing the contrast in their observations of weather, as well as beginning to notice some true signs of fall. Here is what they would like to share with you about our outdoor time this week:
What we were wondering about the rainy forest time before we departed:
Sadie: I wonder if we will see frogs. Frogs need to be wet.
Cameron: I wonder if we will see worms in the dirt. I know worms like rain.
Ellis: I wonder if the river that we went to will be wet. (It was dry last Friday)
What we actually observed and noticed while we were out in nature:
Evan: There is a big hole, mud, and water running in it. We played with big sticks.
Eliott: I liked how we got to build stuff.
Paige: We have two hideouts. One is little. I still like it.
Ella: There is a big hole and I tried to jump over it and I did.
Zod: I know that the hole was called a ditch.
Kaleb: We had snack outside.
Ryan: We got to make logs. We made a bench with sticks.
Noah: There was a lot of grass. It was wet.
Aiden: My fort got wrecked but we built a new and bigger one.
Thanks for taking the time to share in our learning! We have another busy and fun-filled week planned with Picture Day on Tuesday, September 27th, and a field trip to the apple orchard on Friday, September 30th!
