In math we have been doing another unit on shapes. Children are working on identifying and drawing shapes, thinking about how many sides each shape has, counting and recording how many shapes they use to make something, and building and then replicating.
We have been working hard in Fundations tapping out CVC words and learning some new sight words. We started a new unit this week where we will continue breaking words apart and hearing the sounds and reading short words by tapping out the sounds. This is helping students in both their reading and writing! The newest thing in this Fundations unit is learning about digraphs (two letters that stick together to make one sound!)
Mrs. Buehler came in last week and helped the kids plant wheat grass! They have been watering it and waiting for it to grow and it is beginning to sprout! Today we drew and wrote in our science journals about what we notice about the experiment. They are having so much fun making observations and watering their grass as often as I'll allow. :)
I have been noticing new growth in the area of play for many in our class. The imaginative play is happening in a new way in our room where more children are involved and engaged and many children are taking more risks to engage in playing pretend and enjoying it with others. It has been great to see!
When we got back from February break we started a new mindfulness routine where each day after snack we do a mindfulness exercise related to learning to focus and relax. It has been neat to see the kids begin to understand what that means. I feel like a new door is opening for many of them to be aware of what's happening within their own body and mind, and learning that they have some control over it!
