Writer's Workshop

In writer's workshop the students are learning that they can be writers just like one of our favorite authors, Eric Carle! From day one we created a writing club and the children named themselves "The Writing Team". They have learned a saying "when you're done, you've just begun!" And learned how to solve problems all by themselves! We created a poster showing the choices during writing time (add to your picture, add to your words, or start a new piece) and they have a new writing folder to keep their work organized. We are learning about teaching through our drawings and adding words. Can you believe it's only kindergarten?!

Here is a clip of students telling you what they are teaching about in their writing...

Here are some pictures of the "writing" happening! We enourage students to do the best they can, and we are working on hearing sounds in words, and making marks on the page to represent the sounds (sometimes with the letter, sometimes with any letter, and sometimes just a mark!)
If you look closely, you can see the letter "R" labeling the rain!
This student made three marks over the person, labeling the "Dad". He didn't know what letters make the sounds so he made marks to represent /d/ /a/ /d/ (the three sounds!)
This student labeled the first letters of the names of the people in her family.

Kindergarten students are all in different places with their writing. We are working hard to celebrate how our writing teaches others, we picture ideas in our minds and try to get them on paper, and we try to add words the best we can.

  1. Dear Mrs. Dyer's class - These pieces are marvelous! What good language artists you all are! I can't wait to see more of your work.
