Writing in Kindergarten

We have launched our Writer's Workshop in Kindergarten by looking at "famous authors" like Eric Carle, Mo Willems, and more. We are learning that authors usually write about two things: something they did, or something they know a lot about. We are taking a brief hiatus from more minilessons on those topics, and how to choose a topic to write about, because the children are SO curious about how to write words. We are talking this week about how kindergartners can write when they're not sure what it should look like. Some things we've discussed are:
-sometimes people make squiggles where the words go
-some people write things they know how to spell already (like the names of people in their family)
-some people listen to the sounds they hear (especially at the beginning of the word) and write them down

It has been really interesting that many children are hearing the beginning sounds, and are still wanting to write with squiggles. What I am teaching them is that it is OK to write with squiggles, and then you can read what the words say (see the following video for a great example!)
Right now our main goal of writer's workshop is to make children feel like authors, and show them that they can make books just like famous authors. Please help us by encouraging this at home!

Here is some of the amazing work that happened in today's writer's workshop:
