Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins!

Hi Everyone,
We are having some issues with our digital camera, but here is an update of some things we've been doing with pumpkins! We went to the Pumpkin Patch this week and had a wonderful field trip. The kids learned a lot about different seeds, what they look like, and how they protect the pumpkins from environmental hazards. They also got to go through a corn maze and bring a pumpkin home!

Back at school the next day, we used our pumpkins for math! We measured how tall they were with unifix cubes, how much the weighed, and counted the lines on them!

Today we read the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret McNamara. We learned that the longer the pumpkin stays on the vine, the darker it gets and more lines it grows. Each line is a row of seeds, therefore the more lines, the more seeds! We estimated how many we thought were in our class pumpkin from Whitcomb's, then carved it to find out! The kids took pictures, documenting the carving and seed sorting. There were many children who were NOT very excited about the "gross guts", :)
