February

We are having a great month full of new academic learning and also fun little celebrations! The weather has been good to us and we have had lots of fun outside as well!

In literacy we are working hard on learning about CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words through word families. We have focused the last three weeks on word families that have the short a vowel sound (am, an, ap, ag, at, ap). This has been an awesome part of our morning routine and I can just see things coming together for them! We have also learned many new kindergarten "sight" words. Kindergartners are learning that many parts of sight words can be "sounded out" or blended just like the word family words, but there are some parts we also have to learn "by heart" because they don't make the sounds we expect.  We are also continuing practicing handwriting by revisiting the alphabet and how to form uppercase letters along with the lowercase we have been practicing all fall.

In math we have jumped head first into all things teen numbers! We are also revisiting our ten frame dot cards and thinking about different groupings that go together to make ten, and how we can show those on our fingers. For example, seven can look like five and two, or three and four. Building this strong number sense now will pay off for years to come for these mathematicians!

We have had a few fun celebrations, making gingerbread cookies and celebrating the 100th day of kindergarten!
