October 2020

We are really getting into the swing of things in Kindergarten!

We have been so lucky with such wonderful fall weather. We have been reading books and learning a lot about seeds, trees, leaves, and seasonal changes.  We had fun dissecting a sunflower (perhaps some seeds came home in your child's pockets!) and finding seeds from trees and milkweed plants.

We got some Crazy Creek chairs through a grant, and the kids have loved them for eating outside but also for their Sit spots! They enjoyed drawing some seeds in their new nature journals and will draw a leaf tomorrow!

We have also been working on spelling our first names, so we had fun one day doing that with sticks!

Inside, we have begun our math stations. We are building stamina and independence, and the math concepts are just as important as the social habits of managing materials, playing a game with another student, and working through frustration!

We continue to learn two letters a week, doing some sorting and learning sounds, practicing handwriting, and playing games with magnets, adding our new letters each week.

We have begun lots of conversations about the land our forest classroom is on, and how it used to belong to a farm that was where the fire station is, and before that it was Abenaki land. Students are very interested in learning more about this, and have also connected easily with thinking about our own families stories. More to come soon on this! These conversations have been inspired especially by two really wonderful books:

It has also been fun to see the kids connecting and playing and building strong friendships! This is such a lovely group of kindergartners!
