Reading groups are humming right along. We are concluding our consonant study and moving into some more differentiation during our group time. Students have been learning about the sound letters make, isolating sounds at the beginning of words, and using that knowledge to label and begin writing words during writer's workshop! The next several weeks, children will work during their group time on skills at their level. We are solidifying knowledge of letters and sounds, learning about the vowel sounds through some word family sorts, writing words with more sounds, and matching our words to print in nursery rhymes! We will begin using a new program called Heggerty Phonemic Awareness where kids will get (near) daily practice manipulating phonemes and sounds through spoken language. Phonemic Awareness is one of the best predictors of early reading success.
Partner reading with friends from Mrs. LaBerge's class
Cutting out new "snap" words to make word rings for their "I Can Read" folders. (snap words are high frequency words that we can read in a "snap" without "sounding out"
In math we have started a new routine, where we have a whole group lesson or activity around the calendar or number sense activities, and then we move into a "math mixer". Students are mixed between our class and Ms. Read's. Students engage in small group partner games where they are practicing the current skills we are working on, or working in a small group with a teacher learning a new game or revisiting a skill. It is going really well! We just switched out for some new stations!
"Which Numeral Will Win?" -practicing numeral writing with numbers 6-10
"Beat You to Ten" -practicing numeral ID, partners to five and ten, and winning/losing!
"Count and Compare" -practicing numeral ID to 10, and math language greater than and less than"
"Hide and Seek with Hap" -working on number ID, math language before and after
"Flash and Dash to the Castle" -working on flashing fingers in different ways for numbers to 10
We finished up our farm study with Ms. Virginia last week by making ice cream! Over the three weeks, students learned about cows and other farm animals, where food comes from, made cheese and ice cream, and learned about how wool is made into yarn. The kids were so excited each time she came and we had a great visit to the farm!
Our Harvest Soup was a great success as well! Kids got to choose two special Halloween-themed stations for the day outside, and we ended our day with a harvest soup with donated ingredients from many families and student helpers to prepare the soup!
Ms. Wilson (technology integration specialist) visited our classroom last week to teach about digital citizenship. She talked about finding balance between technology and non-technology activities. Mrs. Scott comes in weekly to do short iPad activities and lessons and will be continuing the digital citizenship lessons from common sense media in the coming weeks.
