This week

We have had a wonderful week back from the break from school. I keep finding myself amazed with how mature the children have gotten and how well they know and expect the routines and expectations each day. We have had a really fun time this week exploring Mo Willems books and thinking about what he does as an author that makes his books fun to read. The kids came up with a great list, with things I hadn't even thought of! Here are some of the things they have noticed:
-He uses speech bubbles
-The speech bubbles are pink for Piggie and grey for Gerald
-He uses black lines to show movement
-His books are so funny!
-He is creative
-His characters are mostly animals instead of people

We had fun drawing Piggie and Gerald!

In reader's workshop we have been practicing reading independently and with partners, and have started with some new sight word rings to practice reading these sight words (words we don't have to sound out but know right when we see them). We also call them snap words! Children are also working to help each other with letter sounds and building fluency with those. It has been sweet to see them helping each other.

In math we are beginning a unit on shapes. We are naming shapes, describing attributes, sorting, counting and will soon begin talking about 3-dimensional shapes. We will continue working on number sense goals as well.
