Recycle Rhonda and Forest K!

What a busy last week of October we had! We have been finding some active and sensory-based ways to learn our upper and lowercase letters and master those letter sounds! It has been wonderful to see them using their alphabet charts and the writing partners at their tables to get those sounds down on paper.

We spent a great chunk of our week with Recycle Rhonda from the Chittenden Solid Waste District. She taught us how to reduce, reuse and recycle. We got practice sorting large bags of trash into the categories of compost, recycle and trash. We also learned about what we can compost and got a visit from some lovely worms that will even eat some of our compost each week. The children really know their stuff about these little creatures! I know Rhonda was impressed with all of the great information and vocab that they brought to the table.

We learned that trash goes to a place called a landfill.

Plastic bottles can be recycled.

We were able to sort through the "trash" and find food scraps that could be composted.

Carrots that had been placed in a landfill (1 year later)

If composted, carrots decompose in 2 months!

We learned what bacteria like to eat in our compost...

The Recycle Song

Friday brought our first truly cold forest day. The children embraced it by running around, tree climbing, sweeping leaf piles and building creative structures and forts to stay warm. We were able to cut apart our pumpkins after making predictions about what we might find inside. We learned about the pulp, seeds, shell and stem of the pumpkin. The children used their counting and cardinality skills to count the pumpkin seeds with the ten frames. We wanted to keep track of exactly how many seeds we could extract! We were able to extract 180 seeds with 10 per each child!

Let's keep count!

Stay tuned next week for some pictures of our Halloween Celebration and other adventures in K!
